Accessibility of Advanced AI Models for Smaller Labs

Smaller labs face difficulties in developing widely-used AI models despite the availability of open-source pretrained models. The high cost of reinforcement learning (RL) on top of pretraining seems to be a significant barrier. This limits the ability of smaller labs to compete with major labs in producing high-quality models.
