Managing Chronic Pain in Sickle Cell Patients
The current management of chronic pain patients with sickle cell disease in the ED is problematic, leading to opioid addiction, frequent ED visits, and violent behavior. The existing protocol of administering multiple rounds of IV opioids may be worsening opioid addiction and exposing patients to infections. A more effective approach is needed to address the root causes of pain and opioid seeking behavior.
