Ineffective Retrieval in Domain-Specific Corpora
Standard retrieval methods like cosine similarity often fail to effectively match queries with relevant passages in domain-specific corpora. This is because some embedding dimensions are highly predictive for matching queries to passages, while others are not. Current methods cannot distinguish between these dimensions, leading to retrieval of superficially similar but substantively irrelevant passages.
