Persistent Hallucinated References in Academic Papers

Despite efforts to curb AI misuse, a significant portion of academic papers on arXiv continue to contain hallucinated references. A recent analysis found that 1 in 4 papers still have at least one partially or fully hallucinated reference. This issue undermines the reliability and trustworthiness of academic research. Effective solutions are needed to detect and prevent hallucinated references.
