Neurodegenerative effects of psychiatric medications in bipolar patients

Bipolar patients taking certain psychiatric medications experience significant reductions in brain volume, potentially impacting their long-term health and cognitive function. This issue affects patients with bipolar disorder who are treated with antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, and/or antidepressants. The reduction in thalamic, hippocampal, and amygdala volumes is not observed in patients who do not take these medications or take lithium. This problem requires investigation into its causes and consequences.
