Develop Tissue Culture for Mass Plant Propagation
Many valuable plant varieties are difficult to propagate using traditional methods, while tissue culture could enable rapid multiplication but remains expensive and technically challenging for many species. The challenge is developing accessible tissue culture systems that can enable mass propagation of valuable plants while reducing costs and technical complexity. This requires innovations in culture media, automated systems, contamination control, and scaling techniques. Current tissue culture is often limited to high-value plants due to costs and technical requirements, while many plants that could benefit from tissue culture propagation remain propagated through slower, less reliable methods. Technical barriers include developing cost-effective culture systems, reducing contamination rates, and creating protocols for species that currently cannot be cultured successfully. Success would enable rapid propagation of valuable varieties, reduce propagation costs, accelerate plant improvement programs, and provide propagation tools applicable to conservation, breeding, and commercial production programs requiring rapid plant multiplication.
