Achieve Wireless Power Transmission Across Continents
Develop safe, efficient wireless power transmission systems capable of beaming renewable energy from optimal generation sites to population centers thousands of kilometers away. Solar power is most efficient in deserts, wind power in specific geographical locations, and hydroelectric in mountainous regions, yet population centers requiring power are often far from these optimal sites. Current power transmission loses 8-15% of energy over long distances through resistance in cables. Wireless power transmission using microwave or laser systems could theoretically transmit power from space-based solar collectors or remote renewable installations directly to urban areas with minimal losses. The challenge involves developing high-efficiency power conversion systems, precise beam targeting and safety systems, atmospheric interference mitigation, and international regulatory frameworks. Success would enable global renewable energy sharing, make space-based solar power economically viable, and provide clean energy access to remote regions worldwide.
