Develop Brain-Computer Interface Power Systems
Create ultra-low power, biocompatible electrical systems that can power brain-computer interfaces indefinitely without battery replacement or external charging. Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) hold promise for treating paralysis, depression, epilepsy, and other neurological conditions, but current systems require frequent surgical procedures to replace batteries or uncomfortable external power systems. The challenge involves developing wireless power transfer systems that work through human tissue, creating biocompatible materials that don't trigger immune responses, and designing power management systems that can operate on microwatts while maintaining reliable communication with external devices. Power sources must be completely safe if they fail, immune to electromagnetic interference from medical equipment, and capable of operating for decades without degradation. Success would enable widespread adoption of therapeutic BCIs, restore mobility to paralyzed patients, and open new treatments for mental health disorders.
