Create Piezoelectric Roadway Power Generation
Develop roadway systems embedded with piezoelectric materials to generate electricity from vehicle traffic for large-scale renewable energy production. Vehicle traffic represents enormous kinetic energy that is currently wasted as heat in brakes and road wear. Piezoelectric materials generate electricity when mechanically stressed, making roads ideal platforms for energy harvesting. The challenge involves developing durable piezoelectric materials that survive repeated heavy loading, creating road designs that maximize energy capture while maintaining vehicle safety and comfort, and building electrical infrastructure to collect and distribute the generated power. Current piezoelectric road trials have generated modest amounts of power, but scaling to meaningful energy production requires breakthrough materials and engineering. Success would create a new renewable energy source that scales with transportation usage, provide funding for road maintenance through energy sales, and reduce transportation's environmental impact by making it energy-positive.
