Develop Ecosystem Restoration Technology
Create environmental systems that can restore damaged ecosystems to their original healthy state including soil, water, air, and biological components. Ecosystem restoration would repair environmental damage from pollution, development, climate change, and other human impacts to return ecosystems to their natural functioning state. Current restoration efforts are limited in scope and cannot address complex ecosystem damage effectively. The challenge involves understanding complex ecosystem interactions, developing technologies that can restore all ecosystem components simultaneously, and ensuring that restored ecosystems remain stable and healthy long-term. Applications include restoring forests damaged by deforestation or pollution, rebuilding coral reefs damaged by climate change and pollution, and rehabilitating agricultural land damaged by intensive farming. Success would reverse environmental damage from human activities, restore biodiversity and ecosystem services, and provide healthy environments for human and wildlife populations.
