Develop Metacognitive Reasoning Systems
Create critical thinking systems that can monitor and improve their own reasoning processes, developing self-awareness about reasoning quality and self-improvement capabilities. Metacognitive reasoning would enable thinking about thinking, reasoning about reasoning, and continuous self-improvement of reasoning capabilities. Current metacognitive training is limited and cannot provide systematic improvement of reasoning processes or reliable self-monitoring of thinking quality. The challenge involves developing systems that can monitor reasoning processes accurately, creating self-improvement mechanisms that enhance reasoning capabilities, and ensuring that metacognitive systems can distinguish between good and poor reasoning reliably. Applications include personal reasoning enhancement systems that improve over time, educational tools that teach metacognitive skills, and professional reasoning systems that monitor their own performance. Success would enable continuous improvement of human reasoning abilities, create self-improving reasoning systems, and provide tools for optimal metacognitive development.
