Develop Topological Quantum Computing
Create quantum computers based on exotic quantum states called anyons that are naturally protected from decoherence. Topological quantum computing exploits the properties of certain quantum states that are inherently stable due to their topological properties, potentially providing natural protection against decoherence without requiring complex error correction. However, creating and manipulating these exotic quantum states is extremely challenging. Success would provide a pathway to inherently stable quantum computing that could dramatically reduce the overhead required for quantum error correction.
