Achieve Robot Social Intelligence
Develop robots that can understand human emotions, social cues, and cultural contexts to interact naturally and appropriately with people in social situations. Current robots have limited ability to understand and respond to human social and emotional needs. Socially intelligent robots would need to recognize facial expressions, understand tone of voice, interpret body language, respect personal space, and adapt their behavior to social contexts and cultural norms. This challenge requires advances in emotion recognition, social psychology modeling, cultural understanding, and adaptive behavior generation. Success would enable robots to serve as companions, therapists, teachers, and collaborators in human social environments.
