Achieve Neural Regeneration
Develop methods to stimulate the growth of new neurons and neural connections in the adult brain, potentially enabling recovery from brain injury and age-related cognitive decline. Unlike many other organs, the adult brain has very limited ability to regenerate damaged tissue. Neural regeneration would involve understanding why adult neural regeneration is limited, developing methods to stimulate neural stem cells, and creating environments that support new neural growth. This challenge involves advances in stem cell biology, neural growth factors, and regenerative medicine. Success could enable recovery from stroke, traumatic brain injury, and neurodegenerative diseases, and potentially allow the brain to maintain youthful function throughout life.
