Develop Membrane Protein Crystallization Solutions
Create universal methods for determining the three-dimensional structures of membrane proteins, which make up about 30% of all proteins but are notoriously difficult to study structurally. Membrane proteins are embedded in cell membranes and include many drug targets, but their hydrophobic nature makes them difficult to purify and crystallize. This challenge impacts drug discovery, understanding of cellular transport, and membrane biology. Current methods work for only a fraction of membrane proteins. New approaches might involve membrane mimetics, cryo-electron microscopy improvements, or novel crystallization techniques.
