Explain Developmental Evolution Mechanisms
Changes in development drive major evolutionary innovations, yet we cannot predict how developmental changes will affect adult forms. This challenge involves understanding how evolution modifies developmental processes to create new forms. Barriers include development-evolution integration, gene regulatory network evolution, phenotype prediction from genotype, and constraint identification. Without understanding developmental evolution, morphological evolution will remain unpredictable, synthetic biology will lack design principles, and evo-devo will remain incomplete. Success could predict morphological evolution, guide synthetic organism design, understand constraint evolution, and integrate development with evolution while advancing both developmental and evolutionary biology.
