Develop Mucosal Immunity Enhancement
Most pathogens enter through mucosal surfaces (lungs, gut, reproductive tract), yet mucosal immunity is poorly understood and most vaccines don't provide mucosal protection. This challenge requires understanding mucosal immune responses and developing vaccines and therapies that protect these vulnerable entry points. Barriers include mucosal immune system complexity, tissue-specific responses, microbiome interactions, and delivery challenges for mucosal therapeutics. Without mucosal immunity advances, respiratory and gastrointestinal infections will continue, sexually transmitted diseases will spread, and pathogen entry points will remain vulnerable. Success could prevent most infectious diseases at entry points, develop superior mucosal vaccines, protect vulnerable populations, and create the first line of immune defense while dramatically reducing infectious disease burden.
