Understand Immune System Development
Immune systems must learn to distinguish self from non-self during development, yet errors in this process cause autoimmune diseases and immunodeficiencies. This challenge involves understanding how immune systems develop properly and how to correct developmental errors. Barriers include developmental complexity, early-life interventions, immune education mechanisms, and long-term outcome prediction. Without understanding immune development, autoimmune diseases and immunodeficiencies will continue, immune system education will be incomplete, and early intervention opportunities will be missed. Success could prevent autoimmune diseases from childhood, correct immune development errors, optimize immune education, and ensure proper immune system maturation while reducing lifelong immune disorders.
