Understand Microbial Communication Networks
Bacteria communicate through complex chemical signals that control virulence, antibiotic resistance, and biofilm formation, yet we cannot disrupt these communication systems effectively. This challenge involves understanding and interfering with bacterial communication to prevent harmful behaviors. Barriers include signal diversity, communication complexity, species-specific differences, and therapeutic development challenges. Without disrupting microbial communication, bacteria will continue coordinating harmful activities, antibiotic resistance will spread, and infections will be harder to treat. Success could prevent bacterial coordination, reduce virulence, limit resistance spread, and create new therapeutic approaches while providing alternatives to traditional antibiotics.
