Harness Beneficial Microbiome Engineering
The human microbiome affects health profoundly, yet we cannot reliably engineer beneficial microbial communities or predict their effects on human health. This challenge involves designing and implementing beneficial microbiome modifications for health optimization. Barriers include microbiome complexity, individual variation, community stability, and intervention durability. Without microbiome engineering, we cannot optimize human health through beneficial bacteria, personalized microbiome medicine will remain limited, and microbiome-related diseases will persist. Success could optimize health through beneficial bacteria, treat microbiome-related diseases, provide personalized microbiome therapies, and enhance human health while preventing disease through microbial community management.
