Understand Microbial Social Behaviors
Microorganisms exhibit complex social behaviors including cooperation and competition, yet we don't understand these behaviors well enough to predict or control them. This challenge involves understanding microbial social dynamics and their applications. Barriers include behavioral complexity, measurement challenges, environmental effects, and predictive modeling. Without understanding microbial social behaviors, community dynamics will be unpredictable, applications will be limited, and microbial cooperation will be underutilized. Success could predict microbial community behavior, optimize cooperative systems, control competitive interactions, and harness microbial societies while advancing microbial social science.
