Develop Microbial Terraforming Systems
Terraforming other planets may require microorganisms to modify atmospheric and soil conditions, yet we don't understand the requirements or capabilities for microbial terraforming. This challenge involves developing microbial systems capable of planetary environmental modification. Barriers include extreme planetary conditions, ecosystem establishment, atmospheric modification, and long-term stability. Without microbial terraforming systems, planetary colonization will be extremely difficult, environmental modification will be limited, and space habitat creation will be challenging. Success could enable planetary terraforming, support space colonization, create habitable environments, and advance astrobiology while making other worlds livable for humans.
