Design Molecular Memory Storage Systems
Creating DNA or protein-based information storage systems that can store vast amounts of data in microscopic spaces represents a revolutionary approach to data storage. Current digital storage systems consume enormous amounts of energy and require rare earth minerals. Biological storage systems could be more sustainable, compact, and long-lasting. DNA can store information for thousands of years and has incredible density - all the world's digital data could theoretically fit in a container the size of a shoebox. The challenge involves developing reliable read/write mechanisms, error correction systems, and integration with existing computing infrastructure. Success could solve the growing data storage crisis, reduce environmental impact of data centers, and enable new forms of distributed computing. Barriers include slow access times, high error rates, cost of synthesis and sequencing, and lack of standardized protocols.
