Solve the Protein Interaction Network
Mapping all possible interactions between proteins in human cells could provide a complete blueprint for cellular function and disease. Proteins rarely work alone - they form complex networks of interactions that determine cellular behavior. Understanding these networks completely would reveal how cells function, how diseases develop, and where to intervene therapeutically. Current knowledge covers only a fraction of possible protein interactions, and many interactions are context-dependent. The challenge involves developing methods to detect weak or transient interactions, mapping interactions in different cell types and conditions, and creating computational models of network behavior. Success would accelerate drug discovery, reveal new therapeutic targets, and enable systems-level understanding of biology. This could lead to more effective treatments for complex diseases and personalized medicine approaches. Barriers include technical limitations in detecting protein interactions, enormous complexity of the interaction space, context-dependent nature of interactions, computational challenges in modeling large networks, and need for standardized methodologies.
