Create Interventions for Social Identity Threat
When people's social identity is threatened or devalued, they experience stress, underperform, and sometimes respond with hostility toward other groups. These responses contribute to intergroup conflict and prevent positive social change. Current approaches often inadvertently increase identity threat. This challenge requires understanding how identity threats operate and developing interventions that address legitimate identity concerns while promoting intergroup cooperation. Barriers include the fundamental human need for positive identity, zero-sum thinking about group status, historical grievances, and the complexity of multiple intersecting identities. Without solutions, identity threats will continue fueling conflict, preventing cooperation across group boundaries, maintaining intergroup hostility, and blocking progress on shared challenges. Success could reduce intergroup conflict, improve cooperation across differences, protect psychological wellbeing while enabling social progress, and create more inclusive societies.
