Design Sustainable Industrial Systems for Developing Countries

Developing countries need industrial capabilities for economic development but cannot replicate the resource-intensive and environmentally damaging industrialization paths of developed nations. Current approaches either slow development (prioritizing sustainability) or repeat unsustainable practices (prioritizing growth), but achieving both simultaneously remains unsolved. The challenge involves designing industrial systems that enable rapid economic development while staying within environmental limits, using local resources efficiently, creating good jobs, and building local capabilities. Key obstacles include limited financial resources, infrastructure constraints, skill development needs, technology transfer barriers, and balancing immediate needs with long-term sustainability. Without innovative approaches, developing countries will face impossible choices between development and sustainability. Success would prove that industrial development can lift populations out of poverty while preserving environmental resources for future generations, creating a new model for global development.
