Design Self-Healing Complex Systems for Critical Infrastructure
Critical infrastructure systems like power grids, transportation networks, and communication systems experience failures that cascade through interconnected components, yet creating systems that can automatically heal themselves and prevent cascading failures remains largely theoretical. Current approaches focus on redundancy and rapid repair, but cannot prevent failures or enable systems to restructure themselves automatically when components fail. The challenge requires developing systems that can predict component failures, automatically reroute functions around failed components, repair themselves when possible, and continuously optimize their configuration for resilience. Major obstacles include the complexity of interdependent systems, ensuring safety during autonomous operations, developing self-repair mechanisms, and creating systems that can learn from failures to prevent future problems. Without this capability, critical infrastructure will remain vulnerable to cascading failures that can paralyze entire regions. Success would create infrastructure systems that are nearly impossible to disable, providing unprecedented reliability for modern society.
