Design Evolutionary Complex Systems That Improve Themselves Over Time
Most complex systems degrade over time due to changing requirements, technology evolution, and environmental changes, yet creating systems that evolve and improve themselves automatically remains largely theoretical. Current approaches require human intervention for system updates and improvements, but cannot create systems that understand their own performance and modify themselves for better results. The challenge involves developing systems that can monitor their own performance, identify improvement opportunities, modify their own design and behavior, and validate improvements autonomously. Technical barriers include creating systems that understand their own architecture, developing safe self-modification mechanisms, ensuring improvements don't introduce new problems, and creating systems that can learn from their environment. Without this capability, complex systems will continue requiring expensive maintenance and periodic replacement as they become obsolete. Success would create systems that continuously improve themselves, becoming more valuable and effective over time rather than degrading.
