Design Cybersecurity for Internet of Things at Global Scale
IoT devices create massive security challenges due to their number, diversity, limited resources, and deployment environments, yet creating cybersecurity approaches that can secure billions of IoT devices globally remains unsolved. Current approaches don't scale to global IoT deployment and struggle with device diversity and resource constraints. The challenge requires developing cybersecurity architectures that can secure unlimited numbers of diverse IoT devices, work with extremely resource-constrained devices, and maintain security across devices with different capabilities and manufacturers. Key barriers include IoT device diversity, resource limitations on small devices, scalability to billions of devices, coordinating security across different manufacturers and standards, and maintaining security on devices that cannot be updated regularly. Without scalable IoT security, the expanding IoT ecosystem will create unprecedented security vulnerabilities that could enable massive cyberattacks affecting critical infrastructure and personal privacy. Success would enable secure global IoT deployment that protects both individual devices and the broader internet from IoT-based attacks.
