Design Networks That Automatically Optimize Themselves for Energy Efficiency
Network infrastructure consumes enormous amounts of energy, yet creating networks that automatically optimize their energy consumption without sacrificing performance remains unsolved. Current approaches focus on energy-efficient hardware but cannot dynamically optimize network energy usage based on actual usage patterns and performance requirements. The challenge requires developing networks that can minimize energy consumption while maintaining optimal performance, automatically adjust energy usage based on traffic patterns and requirements, and optimize energy efficiency across all network components simultaneously. Technical barriers include balancing energy efficiency with performance requirements, coordinating energy optimization across multiple network components, predicting energy impacts of optimization changes, and maintaining performance guarantees while minimizing energy usage. Without automatic energy optimization, networks will continue consuming more energy than necessary, contributing to environmental problems and increasing operational costs. Success would enable networks that achieve minimum possible energy consumption while maintaining optimal performance, creating environmentally sustainable network operations.
