Key barriers include detecting subtle cryptographic attacks that don't cause obvious system failures, distinguishing between attacks and normal operation variations, implementing automatic defensive responses that don't compromise system operation, and coordinating attack response across multiple cryptographic systems and components. Without attack-aware cryptographic systems, attacks will continue succeeding because systems cannot detect or respond to them in progress. Success would create cryptographic systems that actively defend themselves against attacks, preventing attack success through automatic detection and response rather than just passive resistance.
